Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various forms of content, including text, images, audio, and synthetic data, by self-training on a predefined dataset. ChatGPT, the revolutionary chatbot launched in November 2022 by OpenAI, is the most well-known example of the new generative AI applications. These applications are disrupting the business models of firms operating in both digital and non-digital markets.
In creative industries, for example, generative AI can help professionals explore new ideas or even assist in the production of new content. Similarly, AI chatbots may simplify repetitive intellectual tasks, such as replying to emails, preparing invoices, or even generating medical prescriptions. The launch of ChatGPT has triggered a competitive race among big tech companies, eager to upgrade existing virtual assistants and launch new products to meet the growing demand for AI tools.
This research project analyses, from an economic and legal perspective, the impact of the generative AI revolution on the business models of firms operating in the digital economy, as well as its effects on competitive dynamics in digital markets.
