What are the foundational principles and capabilities of generative AI? In what ways does generative AI contribute to reducing online disinformation, and what are its limitations? This seminar will delve into this punchy debate using an applied data science perspective.

Generative AI, powered by advances in machine learning and natural language processing, is revolutionising how we approach complex challenges across various sectors.

This seminar offers an accessible introduction to the principles of generative AI, emphasising its historical evolution, the underlying mechanics of machine learning and neural networks, and the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs), while highlighting their role in reducing disinformation and enhancing information reliability.

The first part of the seminar will trace the history of artificial intelligence, offering a clear and engaging narrative of its development, from foundational theories to modern breakthroughs. Participants will gain an understanding of the principles of machine learning and how neural networks are structured and trained to perform increasingly sophisticated tasks. This foundation will lead to a high-level exploration of LLMs, their architectures, and their capabilities in processing and generating human-like language.

The second part will focus on a critical real-world application: reducing online disinformation and improving information reliability. Participants will discover how generative AI can assess the credibility of information sources, detect misinformation, and foster critical thinking.

This seminar is an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge AI technologies and discuss their implications for society, innovation, and policy-making, with a particular focus on fostering trust and accountability in the information age.
