This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the potential impacts of the metaverse on various technologies, firms, and industries. The authors explore different scenarios for the future of the metaverse and aim to derive hypotheses regarding the spatial effects of this transformative process.
The authors distinguish between two evolutive scenarios: the “metaverse shaped by reality view” and the “metaverse shaping reality view.” They examine the factors that influence these scenarios and draw implications for public policy planning.
In the first scenario, traditional policy challenges arise, such as ensuring widespread availability of network infrastructures and facilitating the acquisition of essential skills at the local level. Additionally, this scenario involves managing the reallocation of production factors associated with disruptive technologies and addressing inequalities.
In contrast, the second scenario presents a more radical challenge. It involves ensuring that desirable features are incorporated into the emerging virtual worlds right from the beginning.
By analysing these scenarios and their associated challenges, this paper provides insights into the potential policy considerations and actions required to navigate the complex implications of the metaverse’s development.
