Biography

Dr. Fabrizio Esposito is a leading expert in EU consumer law and regulation of digital markets, currently service as Associate Professor of Private Law at the NOVA School of Law in Lisbon, where he teaches law and economics, methodology of legal research and law of online platforms. Since September 2026, he is a visiting fellow at the Centre for a Digital Society and a visiting professor at Bocconi University.

Dr. Esposito’s scholarship combines doctrinal analysis, in particular of EU consumer and regulatory law, with insights from economic theory, moral and political philosophy, psychology, and empirical social science. Most of his recent research is collaborative, reflecting his conviction that collaborative work is generally of higher quality than individual research.

He is currently working on topics related to digital fairness, including the use of AI in contract, addictive design, dark patterns and more generally, the image of the average consumer and the reforms needed to increase the effectiveness of market participants’ rights.

Professor Esposito sits on the Consulting Board of the European Review of Contract Law, is the co-founder of FIDMA (European Researcher Network on Fairness in Digital Markets and Artificial Intelligence) with Dr. Behrang Kianzad, and is one of the coordinators of the COST Action ‘Normative consciousness in the tech community’, chaired by Dr. Cecilia Isola.

As part of his contribution to society, Dr. Esposito sits on the Expert Group and Agentic AI Contracting. He also acts as class representative in two class actions against Google and Apple and has assisted the Portuguese association D3 in filing the first four class actions for damages caused by addictive design against the providers of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Dr. Esposito holds degrees from the EUI (PhD and LLM) and Bocconi University (LLB and MsC). He has authored more than 80 publications, including books with prestigious publishers, such as Cambridge University Press, Edward Elgar and Springer, as well as articles in several peer-reviewed journals.
